A friend of mine, Barney, started bragging that his Trailer Tent was better and more versatile than my Teardrop Trailer. An argument raged on, so we decided the only way to settle it, was to have a shoot out.
The next day, we drove in convoy to a lovely campsite in Hampshire. On arrival, I simply unhitched my Turtle 1500 Teardrop Trailer, wheeled her into the berth, levelled up, and plugged into the electrics – job done and ready to camp in less than 5 minutes. His heavier Camper Trailer, had to be manoeuvred using the car. Back and forth, back and forth, he was finally in. Easy manoeuvrability I said – that’s 1 -0 to me…get in there!
Of course, I was already set up and ready to camp – all bar putting the awning up. But then it started to rain. So I thought oh well I put the awning up in the morning when it’s sunny. Barney, however, soaking wet, was still trying to put his Trailer Tent up. Canvas was flapping in the wind, everything getting soaking, and the light fading fast. I could see him getting really hacked off and swearing under his breath while I was dry and cosy in my Teardrop. 50 minutes later he was finished. I opened my door and said – easy set-up, that’s 2 – 0 to me. You should have seen the look on his bedraggled face!
Nice and cosy in my fully insulated Turtle, I was already watching a DVD, it’s all built in you see and ready to go. I could hear Barney, still soaking wet, swearing even louder trying to rig up his DVD. Creature comforts I shouted to him – that’s 3 – 0 to me. There was no reply.
The next morning, after a wonderful nights sleep, I got up and attached the awning in the sunshine. Ten minutes later it was done. I opened the galley, put the kettle on and cooked the bacon, then sat in the awning and relaxed. The smell of my delicious bacon obviously woke Barney up. Emerging from his Trailer Tent, looking knackered and still damp – I said good nights sleep? – that’s 4-0 to me. An hour later, Barney finished putting his awning up!
Well, that started another argument. Pleased with his work, he snidely commented, mine is better looking than yours? To settle the argument, he called over a rather posh looking lady who had just arrived with her poor hen pecked husband in a brand new camper van.
I thought she looked liked Mrs Bucket – ha-ha! Barney asked her politely, which one do you think is better? Before you could say Jack Robinson, she was in Barney’s Trailer Tent like a flash. Ooh she said, it’s damp in here. 5- 0 I shouted. It’s quite flimsy. 6 – 0 I shouted. The fixtures and fittings are not all that. 7 -0 I screamed with laughter.
By this time, Barney was really hacked off. OK he said with a snap in his voice, what about his? Well she replied, this is another matter. Cosy and warm, beautifully equipped, well built and very stylish – not like yours. The full height awning fits beautifully and the galley is simply wonderful. Not wanting to take too many points for all the remarks – that’s 8-0 I exclaimed. Barney, still knackered from a poor night’s sleep, was distraught.
The following day, it was time to return home. I looked up in the sky and thought; I’ve got a few minutes to pack up before it rains again. Barney obviously thought the same. 15 minutes later, the awning was down and stowed away, the electrics unplugged and the trailer was manoeuvred by hand and hitched on ready to go. Just as I had finished, the heavens opened! Poor Barney, soaked again, canvas flapping in the wind, struggled on his own to put the Trailer Tent down. I felt a little sorry for him, but this was a shoot out after all! Finally, when he had finished, you could see defeat on his face. 9-0 I said.
When I arrived home, I unhitched my Turtle 1500 Teardrop, wheeled her by hand into the garage, unpacked and was in doors in moments. I decided to ring Barney and his wife answered. She said he’s outside setting up the Trailer Tent to dry it out. 10-0 I said. I thought he was grumpy and hacked off she replied.
The next day, Barney put his Trailer Tent on ebay. The shoot-out victory was flawless.
And the moral of the story is – if you’re thinking of buying a trailer tent don’t. Buy a turtle Teardrop Trailer instead. The shoot-out speaks for itself.
Final result – Teardrop Trailer 10 – Trailer Tent 0. Barney’s got a new Teardrop Trailer, and at a snip of the price of his Trailer Tent.
